Harlow is our home town, and fire alarms are where we do some of our most detailed work here. Sarum Systems designs, installs, commissions and maintains systems for factories and warehouses on Templefields, The Pinnacles, Ash Industrial Estate, Roydonbury and Burnt Mill, offices and labs in the Harlow Enterprise Zone, schools, care settings, HMOs and the flats over the parades at Bush Fair and Staple Tye. Kentec and Advanced panels, Apollo detection, a three hour response commitment on maintained systems, and we take over panels another company fitted.
HD & 4K camera systems with remote viewing, recording and smart motion alerts.
Wired & wireless intruder alarms, monitored and app-connected, fitted to BS EN 50131.
Keypad, fob and door-entry systems that control exactly who goes where.
Fire detection and alarm systems designed, installed and serviced to BS 5839.
Harlow's fire alarm picture has changed quickly. Office blocks in and around the town centre have been converted to flats under permitted development, with Terminus House alone turned into 214 homes, so buildings designed for daytime office use now have people sleeping in them and need a fire strategy to match. The council brought in a borough-wide Article 4 direction on small HMOs in 2021, so new shared houses need planning permission, but the existing HMO stock still needs BS 5839-6 systems and landlords who keep them working. On the employment side, the Enterprise Zone covers Kao Park on London Road South, Harlow Science Park on London Road North, and Templefields, putting data centre, laboratory, office and manufacturing risks on neighbouring plots. Older Templefields units often still carry panels fitted by firms that no longer trade, with zone charts that no longer match the building. Fire safety in Harlow is enforced by Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, and we design and document every system so it stands up to their inspection.
On a Templefields or Pinnacles unit, the first job is checking the system still matches the building. Mezzanines get added, offices get partitioned, racking goes up, and detection that was right ten years ago now leaves gaps. We re-survey against the current fire risk assessment, update the zone chart and confirm the category, often P2 property protection in storage areas with L category cover for the occupied parts. Where several tenants share one panel, we establish who the responsible person is for the common system before anything else. In converted office blocks and HMOs, landlords need detection that suits a sleeping risk and a clear evacuation strategy for the common parts. Schools and care settings get panels set up so staff see exactly which zone is in alarm. Where Paxton access control is fitted, we link it so escape doors release the moment the alarm sounds.
