Sarum Systems designs, installs and maintains fire alarms across Newmarket, for training yards and studs, staff accommodation, shops and offices on the High Street, hotels and guest houses, and the businesses that serve racing. We fit Apollo detection with Kentec and Advanced panels, take over systems another company installed and service them to BS 5839-1. Stables, feed rooms and hay stores need a different approach from an office, and we design for that. The survey is free, and maintained systems get an engineer within three hours of a fault.
HD & 4K camera systems with remote viewing, recording and smart motion alerts.
Wired & wireless intruder alarms, monitored and app-connected, fitted to BS EN 50131.
Keypad, fob and door-entry systems that control exactly who goes where.
Fire detection and alarm systems designed, installed and serviced to BS 5839.
Newmarket is built around racing. The town has around 70 training yards looking after more than 3,000 horses, and over 60 stud farms in and around it, so fire risk here includes animals, bedding and fodder as well as people. Many yards combine stabling, tack and feed rooms, offices and living space, and some of the older ones are listed, with staff accommodation in the lofts above the boxes. That makes them sleeping risks, which changes what the fire risk assessment will ask for. The High Street, between the Clock Tower of 1887 and the Jockey Club Rooms, has period shops with flats above and businesses that get very busy during race meetings and the bloodstock sales at Tattersalls. Studs and yards out beyond the town can sit well away from the house and the road, so early warning that reaches the right people matters even more. Fire safety in Newmarket is enforced by Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service, and we design and document every system so it stands up to their inspection.
Smoke detectors and stables do not mix well. Dust from hay, straw and bedding, plus damp and insects, cause false alarms and clog heads quickly, so in boxes, barns and feed stores we usually specify heat detection, keeping smoke detection for offices, tack rooms with electrics and staff accommodation. Where people sleep above the stables, the escape route from their rooms needs early warning and the alarm must be heard in every bedroom. Separate staff cottages and flats are covered by BS 5839-6. Across a yard, sounders are set so staff hear them at the far end, the panel goes near the main gate where a keyholder will find it, and any fob-controlled doors on an escape route release when it sounds. Larger sites get clear zones by barn and building.
